But the 23-year-old - who made a successful return to action in Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to the Pilgrims after eight months out - insists wrapping up promotion is the immediate priority.

“We definitely don’t want them getting the title before us,” said McCullough.

“We’re a bit disappointed we lost the home record as well, but it’s just part of football. We go and try and beat them to the league title now.

“The target at the start of the season was just promotion obviously,” he added.

“We want to do that first and then go and win the league. We don’t want them beating us to the title.”

McCullough, out since July after damaging his cruciate knee ligament in a friendly at York City, is in contention to start at Grimsby Town on Saturday.

The Northern Ireland international had been expected to miss the entire season.

“I’ve worked hard in my recovery and luckily enough managed to come back sooner than expected,” he said.

“It has been a long journey for me but it all went to plan.

“Injuries are part and parcel of the game so I’ve tried to be positive about it and embrace it a little bit.

“It felt nice to get back out there. My knee is fine, I just need to work on match fitness. I’m sure that will come with the more time I get on the pitch.”
