Doncaster Rovers' budget '˜very competitive for this league', insists Grant McCann

But the 38-year-old insists Rovers do have the resources to mount a serious promotion challenge next season.

Former Rovers boss Darren Ferguson is understood to have resigned last month after failing to see eye to eye with the board over the funds required to get the squad up to top six standard.

McCann believes he has inherited a squad which, with some carefully thought out additions, can mix it with the best in League One.

And the former Peterborough manager is adamant that Doncaster’s budget is sufficient for a club with designs on promotion back to the Championship.

“The budget is very competitive for this league,” McCann told reporters at his unveiling last week.

“A lot of people always talk about budgets and stuff but it doesn’t really interest me.

“It’s something I never really dealt with at Peterborough, I just left it to the secretary.

“I know for a fact the budget wasn’t as big there as it is here.

“They do it a different way there, Darren [MacAnthony - Peterborough chairman] does bring in players on transfer fees so that adds to it.

“The budget here is competitive, definitely.

“But it doesn’t mean it’s the be all and end all.”

Rovers have shifted high earning duo Andy Williams and Cedric Evina off their books this summer, while Mathieu Baudry and Craig Alcock also departed.

So far this summer centre back Tom Anderson has arrived from Burnley and young Ashford United forward Max Watters has been added to the development squad.
