If Wayne Rooney is to take his place in English football folklore as a player of genuine international significance then now is the time.

Following on from Montenegro on Friday night to Poland on Tuesday he must demonstrate why former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson once compared him to Pele.

He must turn in the sort of performance which David Beckham produced against Greece at Old Trafford more than a decade ago to drag England to the World Cup finals in 2002, a display which contained that spectacular injury-time free-kick equaliser but which was really a study in leadership, focus, determination and example.
