Club confident of causing friendly shock

Have your say

Sheffield FC host Grimsby Town tonight - a side determined to get back into the Football League.

Yet a win over Worksop Town on Monday has put Sheffield in confident mood for the visit of the Blue Square Premier side. Club beat Worksop Town 1-0 with new signing Conor Higginson getting off the mark.

Grimsby will be tougher opposition; they are targeting promotion back into the Football League.

Sheffield FC manager Mark Shaw commented: “Grimsby will be a difficult game, if you look at our pre-season fixtures there isn’t an easy tie - we have organised these games knowing there would be different challenges. We have the same attitude to all fixtures. We want to create a winning mentality and I want to win as many games as possible while protecting the players from fatigue and injury.

“The most important result will be on the August 13 against Sutton Coldfield (Evo Stik First Division South curtain raiser) - we win that game and we move on to the Tuesday against Kidsgrove and so on. When points are on the table we have to have that desire even more. At the moment we are practising our game play, making sure it’s right from day one.”

Grimsby finished 11th in the Blue Square Bet Premier last season, their first season outside the Football League in nearly 100 years. Tonight will be their second pre-season friendly after a first match loss to Rotherham.

They are sending a first team squad for this game and aim to get their first win of the campaign on the board.

Entry: £6 adults; £3 concessions.
