National League clubs have voted to end the 2019/2020 season, it has been announced.

Clubs in all three divisions were asked to vote on whether no more games should be played because of the coronavirus crisis and a “majority” backed the proposal after 90 per cent of responses were received.

The options concerning the outcomes of the season - such as deciding league positions on average points per game or making it null and void - “remain under careful and timely consideration,” the National League said in a statement.

Once those options – which could still involve clubs being promoted and relegated - have been confirmed a second vote will then take place on ‘how’ to end the season.

Promotion-chasing Notts County and Yeovil Town both expressed concern at holding the first vote without not knowing the options for the second.

Some clubs are still yet to have their say but they still can. However, those votes “will not change the outcome.”

Chesterfield were one of the clubs who voted to end the season.

National League chief executive officer, Michael Tattersall, said “At a time when the entire country is wrestling with the devastating impact of Covid-19, the cancellation of the remaining normal season matches brings a degree of certainty to our clubs coping with the business implications of the virus.”

The National League said they decided to announce the outcome now so that clubs could “make business decisions with greater clarity as soon as possible.”

Blues boss John Pemberton had previously said he would have liked the season to have resumed when safe to do so but he did not think it was possible and said it was “sensible” to end it now.

Chesterfield's last match came against Dover on March 14 which ended 1-1.

The Spireites were 19th in the table when the season was halted and cannot be relegated whatever outcome is decided.

The remaining fixtures in the National League North and National League South seasons have also been cancelled.
