Chesterfield's new striker is more Le Fondre than Vardy says old boss

That’s the opinion of the man who helped turn Kristian Dennis’ career around, following his release by Macclesfield in 2010.

John Flanagan signed the frontman for non-league Mossley, before taking him to Curzon Ashton where Kristian bagged 61 goals in 72 appearances.

Despite making a huge leap back into the Football League this week with the Spireites, Flanagan says Kristian’s non-league origin is his only similarity to England international Vardy.

“He’s just a goalscorer, he’s not one who will particularly create a lot of chances for others, he gets on the end of things, he’s got a terrific left foot.

“He’s a bit like Adam le Fondre, left foot, not the biggest, not slow but not particularly quick, and doesn’t think twice about shooting.

“There’s no comparison to Jamie Vardy, who is blessed with exceptional pace and has made the most of what he’s got.”

Flanagan is delighted for his former striker however, and hopes he’s given the time he needs to adapt to life in League One.

“The manager has to give him a run of games,” he said.

“I think Danny Wilson tends to be quite fair, and although it’s a bit fashionable to take a non-league player you have to show patience.

“I’m confident he will score goals.

Curzon Ashton’s manager has been quick to remind Dennis, who spent last season on loan at Macclesfield, from parent club Stockport, of his roots.

“I’ve been in touch with him today just to say congratulations and told him to remember I was the one who got him back on track after he came away from Macclesfield the first time.

“I had seen him play at Woodley Sports and got him in at Mossley, then took him to Curzon.

“He had a great time with us, he got 40-odd goals one season.

“He’s a smashing lad, I’m really pleased for him.”
