Chesterfield: Wilson confident for run-in

With Jordan Slew fresh from scoring four in the reserves, Connor Dimaio and Declan John assimilated into his starting XI and Dan Gardner back in contention, Wilson has a plethora of options heading into a busy and vital month of the campaign.

“We should have enough to get the results we need for the rest of the season,” he said.

The Spireites have been boosted by the return of midfielder Liam O’Neil as they prepare to travel to high-flying Gillingham tomorrow.

O’Neil was knocked out at Burton Albion a fortnight ago and diagnosed with a concussion.

But the 22-year-old returned to training this week and should be included in the Spireites’ matchday squad tomorrow.

“He’s looked okay in training,” Wilson said.

“We’re just waiting for the doctor’s view to confirm whether he can start or be on the bench.”

Definitely out is midfielder Chris Herd who will be out for at least a week with a hip injury suffered during last weekend’s vital win over Crewe Alexandra.

Should he return, O’Neil will likely move into central midfield to cover Herd’s absence although Jay O’Shea is an option having replaced the Australian last week.

Dan Gardner sat out the clash with Crewe but played 45 minutes in a reserve team game this week and is fit enough to be considered for the trip to the Priestfield.

Wilson is understandably expecting a tough game this weekend against League One’s top scorers and current third placed side.

He said: “They’re tough, well organised and in Bradley Dack, who can be considered either a deep lying forward or a high line midfielder, they’ve got someone who’s scoring plenty of goals.

“They’re going really well at home, though the last few games have seen them have a bit of a blip.

“But they’ve had a great season and are at the top of the play-off bunch, Justin Edinburgh is doing a great job.

“The chairman Paul Scally must be delighted with his appointment.”
