Chesterfield striker baffled over form improvement

The former Wolves man was in fine fettle in the previous two games, the draw with Coventry City and the big win over Shrewsbury Town and he grabbed Spireites vital third at Spotland, forcing defender Jimmy McNulty into an error ahead of a neat finish.

But he is unsure why the team has stepped up a gear under Wilson. Ebanks-Blake said: “It’s difficult to put your finger on it, when a new manager comes in, it gives different injections to different players.

“But most importantly the players themselves have started playing to their potential; the manager has come in and simplified things and given players the confidence to play a natural game. There’s been no magic wand, it’s just been that we’ve started to pick up a few results and it’s been positive. We want to keep going on in that vein.”

On his goal, he added: “I just nipped in at the front of the defender, he delayed on the ball and I got in and just slotted it past the keeper. I was delighted to score, but the three points are more important because we showed massive amounts of character.”

Ebanks-Blake is re-joined on the striker’s roster by returning Armand Gnanduillet, back from a three-month loan spell at Teddy Sheringham’s Stevenage. The French-born 23 year-old scored six goals in 16 appearances having failed to score for Spireites in a dozen appearances this season.

Drew Talbot and Ian Evatt could be back in contention for Saturday’s trip to Wigan Athletic. Talbot has recovered from a hamstring strain and then a bout of food poisoning whilst Evatt’s Achilles injury has been healing quicker than expected. Saturday’s star performer Gboly Ariyibi will be unavailable through suspension.
