Chesterfield: Spireites on the ttack despite Ariyibi absence

Manager Danny Wilson says Chesterfield are going to Wigan Athletic tomorrow 'to attack'.

He said: “They’re far too good a side for you to sit back and soak up the pressure. If we go there and do that, we’ll lose.”

Chesterfield’s boss will be without the suspended star of last week’s 3-2 win at Rochdale, Gboly Ariyibi, so he’ll have to decide between Dan Gardner and Rai Simons as a replacement.

Both made impacts in their last appearances off the bench, Gardner teeing up the Spireites’ second at Dale while Simons came on against Shrewsbury two weeks ago and scored two.

Gardner is in pole position, being a natural wideman.

Wilson said: “I want to play square pegs in square holes. I know sometimes you have to move away from that - at the moment, we have two midfielders learning their current positions at full-back.

“We have other options as well to cover for Gboly. Being without him is frustrating, especially as video evidence confirms his first yellow card was a foul and not a dive, but you can’t appeal yellow cards.”

Ian Evatt (Achilles) remains out of the picture while Armand Gnanduillet returns to the selection pot after returning from a six-goal loan spell at Stevenage.

“We’ve had a couple of enquiries about Armand, but there have been no concrete offers so if he stays, fine,” Wilson said.

“We’ve had no enquiries at all about Sam Morsy.”

Wilson confirmed that Chris Herd’s deal at the proact Stadium will now run to the end of the season, the Australian having established himself in the centre of midfield alongside Morsy.

Promotion-chasing Wigan, Wilson’s home-town club, are unbeaten in a dozen league games against Chesterfield stretching back to 1994.

Their expensive squad includes former Spireites David Perkins and Craig Davies, whilst ex-keeper Mick Pollitt is on the coaching staff.
