The former Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United boss was appointed as Dean Saunders’ replacement on Christmas Eve as was itching to get back into action after leaving Oakwell in February.

“I was ready to get back into management at the end of February,” he said. “It’s like a drug and I’ve missed it.

“It was a no brainer coming here.

“The club and the stadium are excellent, the squad is good.

“Once I received a call and had met Chris Turner, who I know well, and the chairman, it was an easy decision.”

Wilson is likely to watch from the stands this afternoon as the Spireites visit Peterborough United before taking charge of his first game on Monday when Coventry City visit the Proact.

Chief executive Turner felt long time friend Wilson fit the bill for the job.

He said: “He’s an excellent manager with a 40 per cent win record over 1,00 games.

“We’ve had a bad six weeks and we needed someone to guide us back to calmer waters.

“I know how Danny works. He’s a great person and a great ambassador for football.

“We had a lot of applicants. Some would surprise people as they’re in good jobs.

“But selecting managers is not easy – just look at the problems at Manchester United.

“You have to loom at their record, look beyond obvious disappointment and appoint someone who you have a good gut feeling about.

“Danny fits that bill.”

Chesterfield look set to hand a debut to 18-year-old Derek Daly at left back this afternoon.
