In the 89th minute the Spireites were awarded a penalty, Jake Orrell converting.

And within 40 seconds of injury time, Jake Beesley capped the comeback with a smart finish.

Victory maintained Chesterfield’s one point lead at the top of the Final Third Development League East table - but they will finish second if Notts County beat Gateshead.

Reserve team coach Ritchie Humphreys was delighted with the end of the game, if not the start.

He said: “We were sloppy in the first half and gave the ball away too many times, seeing us behind at half time.

“The second half was much better and we created half chances throughout to give ourselves the chance to get back into the game.

“The last couple of minutes were incredible and it was brilliant to end the game and the season in such a way, and you never know what will happen in the final Notts County game and whether we may still sneak the title.”
