Chesterfield players and staff 'are going to be furloughed'

The National League season is currently suspended indefinitely due to the pandemic.

No date has been set for when it could resume if the campaign is not cancelled.

A number of National League clubs have either furloughed staff and players or asked them to take a pay cut because of the financial difficulties they are experiencing with no matchday revenue.

The government’s job retention scheme allows businesses to claim 80 per cent of employees’ wages, up to a maximum of £2,500 per person, per month before tax.

On Friday the Premier League announced a £125m financial package for Football League and National League clubs.

On the Premier League’s announcement, Spireites company secretary, Ashley Carson, said: “This is an amazing gesture. We await to see how this money cascades down the leagues.”

He added: “In the meantime the staff and players at Chesterfield are going to be furloughed but we are still in discussions with the players on this.

“They totally get where the club is and the financial implications of in effect currently closing down.

“I am appreciative of the discussions currently taking place and irrespective of the potential funding that may be received, the players are committed to helping and supporting the club.”
