JOHN Sheridan has defended a lack of loan signings since the emergency loan market opened a month ago.

The Spireites manager, under fire from fans over the issue, is trying to sign a striker and a midfielder and hopes to land deals this week.

With David Davis having been recalled by Wolves and Dean Morgan gone to Oxford, fans have been clinging to the hope that replacements will come in.

“I’ve been trying to get a striker and a midfielder,” said Sheridan. “Everyone thinks you can just go out and get players and a lot of people are saying ‘why haven’t you brought this in or that in?’. But it’s not easy to get someone who’ll get us out of the position we’re in.

“If I bring a striker in, I’d expect him to get me four or five goals before the end of the season, if not more. I’ve got to try and make sure he’s a good one..

“I’m not just going to bring anyone in but I’m trying. I’ve spoken to some clubs, so hopefully something can happen this week.”
