chesterfield took the lead through Liam Cooper but then saw Tranmere hit back to win.

Lee had to be sharp to deny Stockton, who shot well on the turn from six yards with Cooper on his heels. The corner was not put to good use.

A series of Rovers errors led to Spireites taking a 31st minute lead. Boa Morte took advantage on the left of a mix-up, passing to Whitaker whose angled shot was tipped round the post by fon Williams. Boa Morte’s right wing corner was poor but Rovers defence was worse and they were somewhat statuesque as COOPER nipped in to score from a yard.

Smith hit wide and from the goal-kick, Rovers attacked and O’Halloran picked the ball up, made rapid ground and forced Lee into another fine save.

STOCKTON had a bitter- sweet moment, booked for a foul on Hird but within 30 seconds, and three minutes before the break, he seized his moment, hitting low from just outside the box to equalise.

Boa Morte was harshly carded after rolling off Goodison in a Spireites attack and he rode his luck soon afterwards when he chirped up at the fourth official. Worse was to come though when O’Halloran teased Talbot and crossed for McGURK to score from close in on 57 minutes.

Talbot hacked away an O’Halloran cross as the home side looked the more likely late scorers. Another two corners followed and O’Halloran got a head to one but Lee somehow scooped the ball away with the Rovers man convinced it had crossed the line.
