Spireites sign Premier League defender

CHESTERFIELD have signed 21-year-old right-back Javan Vidal on loan from Manchester City. He's had previous loan spells at Grimsby Town, Aberdeen and Derby County.

The former England Under-20 international, who's recently covered from a back injury, has made one first-team appearance for Roberto Mancini's side and he goes straight into the squad for the trip to Shrewsbury Town.

John Sheridan has been searching for a right-back since Jack Hunt returned to Huddersfield Town after a six-month stint at the B2net.

Vidal has signed initially until February 26.

Meanwhile, Deane Smalley looks set to start for Chesterfield in the tricky match at Shrewsbury Town tomorrow.

The 22-year-old, on loan from Oldham, is in fine form at the moment.

As a sub, he scored Chesterfield's first goal at Accrington Stanley as they nicked a point from what looked certain defeat.

He followed that up with an excellent performance, and another goal, in the win at Southend United. However he was back on the bench for last weekend's win over Stevenage.

On Wednesday, he scored for the reserves in their Derbyshire FA match with Derby County, a performance that looks certain to cement Smalley's place as a starter at Greenhous Meadow. Jack Lester, frequently rested in away games, looks set to be kept in reserve again, the only change to the team that beat Stevenage.

Jamie Lowry, and Scott Griffiths, are set to be in the squad.
