Chesterfield reserves are mirroring everything the first team do, so players are fully equipped to step up and do a job for Dean Saunders.

Spireites’ second string were in action again this week, in a behind closed doors game against Sheffield United.

The game ended 1-1, although Chesterfield were leading until the final minutes when a controversial refereeing decision cost them, in the eyes of Saunders.

“We played really well. We had three trialists playing who hadn’t met each other before,” he said.

“They had quite a strong team out.

“The referee cost us the game in the end. We’re winning 1-0 and the referee has cost us really. I let him know.

“But the players did well and that’s all part of the plan, the learning ground for the players.”

The reserves set up and employ the same brand of football as the first team, for a specific reason.

Saunders explained: “They play exactly the same as we play and that’s the learning part for them.

“Every reserve game we play, we do the same set plays, I take the team talk and say the same things to them.

“When I need them to play they know exactly what they’re doing and I can just slot them in.

“If they make mistakes in reserve games that I think might cost the first team I tell them.”
