Dean Saunders says he is absolutely delighted to have got off to a winning start as Chesterfield FC mamanger.
Spireites came from behind to beat Barnsley 3-1 and, in the process, showed they have not lost their attacking edge despite the departure of Sam Clucas and Gary Roberts.
Said Saunders: “We played great; they scored on a counter-attack but I was really pleased with the performance, we scored some good goals and had good performances from a lot of our players.
“I’m pleased that Sylvan’s got off the mark, he’s obviously a goal scorer and needs to get off the mark.
“Jay and Sam’s goals were great and we could have got more as we ran out comfortable winners in the end.
“We were on the button, we lost an early goal but then showed the character to put it behind them and come back.
“We kept driving and driving and their goalkeeper kept them in it in the first half.
“The groundsman has got the pitch right and the grass short for us, so he played his part so well done to him.
“The fitness coach has played his part because it was obvious how fit and strong we looked out there. The players have done great today.
But Saunders said he would not let his side get carried away by the promising start.
“I’m not getting carried away with the whole thing, we’ve played well but it was only the first game and we didn’t know how it would,” he added.
“I was speaking to Lee Johnson before the game and he said ‘Barnsley could win 3-0 or lose 3-0’ and I felt the same.
“I think all managers feel the same because pre-season is not the real thing and today was the real thing.
“It is the first game and we will find out after six games where we are weak and where we are strong. I think I know those answers and I will be adding some payers to what we have got
“I’m tryin to get the best players we can to fit in the team, they have got to be decent players to get into our team. I enjoyed watching the game today, I always felt we would get back into the game.”
