The deadline given by Stockport County to their skipper Paul Turnbull to accept their deal has passed.

County, who earlier this week signed ex Spireites striker Martin Gritton, gave the 22-year-old a midweek ultimatum which indicates he could well be on his way out of Edgeley Park. Northampton Town confirmed they were out of the race earlier this week, leaving John Sheridan favourite to snap up the midfielder who has been with Stockport since he was 11. But sources at County say he may yet stay.

Turnbull, who scored against Sheridan’s side in the 1-1 draw last season, is a tenacious but skilful engine room operator. Spireites remain in the race for strikers Clayton Donaldson (Crewe) and Chris Porter (Derby) and there’s still hope that Bury’s Kyle Bennett may make his way to the B2net, but Doncaster Rovers seem to have leapt to the front of that queue.

The kick-off for the Spireites away league game at Scunthorpe United on New Year’s Eve has been brought forward to 1pm.
