CHESTERFIELD want to sign former Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Richard Wood, The Star understands.

Spireites owner Dave Allen is thought to be a big admirer of Wood, who has not played at Coventry City since February because of a knee problem.

Wood was given his Owls debut in 2003 when Spireites chief executive Chris Turner was manager at Hillsborough. He made his debut as a substitute in a 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion. His first start came in Wednesday’s memorable 7-2 victory at Burnley, and he grabbed the club’s third goal.

Wood made 189 Owls appearances before a loan switch that was followed by a permanent move to Coventry in January 2010. The 26-year-old played 19 times before damaging his knee.

Grant McCann, formerly of Barnsley, is also on the Spireites radar. The midfielder, a set piece specialist, played regularly at Peterborough United last season but has been made available by boss Darren Ferguson.
