This week holds a special anniversary for Chesterfield FC, writes club historian Stuart Basson.
Thursday sees the 22nd anniversary of this pivotal game at Stockport in the 1984-5 season.
Chesterfield knew a win would all but seal promotion to Division Three and Les Hunter’s header delivered the points.
Promotion became certain when fifth-placed Hereford United lost at Chester on 1st May, with the 1.345 attendance at Sealand Road swelled by some Town fans.
The second photo shows Bob Newton scoring in a 3-1 win over Crewe in Chesterfield’s next game which, combined with Bury’s surprise defeat at Wrexham, left the Spireites needing a point from their last two games to secure the championship.
This was achieved with a goalless draw at Peterborough.
