Spireites came from behind to easily beat Scunthorpe United thanks to an Eoin Doyle hat-trick and a late Sam Morsy goal.
Spireites made a disastrous start to the second half, conceding just 30 seconds after the restart. United moved down the right and fed the ball diagonally in and with the home rearguard looking for help from the linesman, PADDY MADDEN picked the ball up on the edge of the six to beat keeper Lee.
The home side had a great chance to level on 51 when ex-Owl centre half Llera upended Johnson in the box. The officials debated long and hard as to whether it was a goal scoring opportunity, but only a yellow was waved. Eoin Doyle’s 12 yarder rattled the bar and United scrambled the rebound away from a corner that caused plenty of problems.
Doyle atoned on 56 when he converted left footed from six yards after fine work between Johnson and Clucas, the latter crossed for the Irishman to level.
Johnson, increasingly in the game, teased United’s defence but they broke away after a cross, Madden saw Lee save well but the former Yeovil striker will have been disappointed to have headed the rebound over the bar.
Villa man Johnson played a superb pass through to Doyle, ho beat Canavan in the race to receive and he calmly slotted the ball beyond Olejnik to put the hosts in front.
Dawson was booked as United’s frustration clearly showed but the game was by now so open, anything was possible.
Doyle, sniffing a third, twice got into great positions but the Iron defence was solid to keep him out as Spireites looked to exploit the increasing gaps that were developing.
Taylor came on for Adelakun who’d not followed up his decent first half after the break.
Canavan was beaten all ends up by Doyle and he brought the Irishman down for another penalty; he was booked. Desperate for that hat-trick, the earlier miss was forgotten and Doyle grabbed the ball, placed it on the spot and hammered it home for his first three timer in England to make it 3-1 on 72.
Boco hit high from 25 yards as Spireites bossed the game. Myrie-Williams replaced Dawson for Iron. Jones hit over for the Spireites ahead OF Kee replacing Sparrow and Gnanduillet coming on for Clucas.
Jones almost headed into his own net from a United corner but Lee’s chest saved the ball and from the break Johnson fed Sam Morsy who grabbed a fourth on 89.
Doyle received a standing ovation as he was replaced by Ariyibi.
