Few people might have expected a 20-year-old to be Chesterfield’s Player of the Year, but Louis Reed’s performances have not come as a surprise to one team-mate in particular.

Reed, on loan from Sheffield United, was named the Sheffield Star Player of the Year on Monday night for consistently being the best performer in a blue shirt during the ill-fated 2017/18 campaign.

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale came through the Sheffield United ranks with Reed before leaving Bramall Lane to join Bournemouth in January of last year.

So he knew what Reed, a year older than the 19-year-old stopper, was capable of doing.

And Ramsdale is of the belief that Reed can be even better than he has been this season.

“I’d seen it day in and day out at Sheffield United,” said the on-loan goalkeeper.

“I think he’s better than what he’s shown this year - he’s been very, very good, but I think he’s better than what he’s shown, from what I saw at Sheffield United.

“Maybe he needed this, because it can help him for next year to establish himself in a team, but I was never surprised at what he’s done.

“He deserves a lot of credit.”

Reed’s summer arrival at the Proact came in the wake of a loan move for Blades team-mate David Brooks that fell apart.

The midfielder has played 47 of Chesterfield’s 50 games this season.

In the second half of the campaign under Jack Lester’s management he added a goalscoring threat to his repertoire, finding the net three times.

Reed has also topped the League Two charts for passes made and figured highly in the rankings for defensive duels.
