Midfielder wants out and Town boss won't stand in his way

Martin Allen has revealed Robbie Weir wants to leave the Proact this summer and the manager will not be standing in his way.

The Northern Irishman, who triggered a contract extension with his 44 appearances last season, is keen to play regular football – something Allen could not promise him.

Chesterfield’s new manager has brought in a pair of central midfielders already in Sam Wedgbury and Curtis Weston.

But he did want to keep Weir.

“It’s his choice, not mine,” said Allen.

“He intimated he wanted to be going somewhere and playing, and I couldn’t guarantee him a place.

“I thought he would be helpful to us with his experience, but at his age I don’t think we can stand in his way.”

Whether Weir finds new employment or ends up reporting back for pre-season training with the Spireites, Allen will be content.

“I hope to be able to help him get a club,” the manager told the Derbyshire Times.

“If he ends up staying I will be perfectly fine with it.

“He played well in that game I came up and saw, against Newport.

“When he came on I thought the team improved.”

Weir signed under Gary Caldwell on the eve of the 2017/18 season after a successful trial period.

He featured in the middle of the park and at right-back last season, wearing the captain’s armband for large parts of the ultimately doomed campaign.

His best moment as a Town player was undoubtedly the last gasp winner over Barnet at the Proact.

He also found the net in a 3-2 defeat by Yeovil.

It was the second successive season that he’s finished bottom of League Two, having suffered the same fate in the 2016/17 campaign with Leyton Orient.
