Spireites are hoping to complete the signing of Scunthorpe United midfielder Jimmy Ryan today.
The 24-year-old made 49 appearances for Scunthorpe United last season, his second campaign at Glandford Park, seeing him pass the 200 league game mark.
He had previously been with Accrington Stanley and Shrewsbury Town after starting as a junior at Liverpool.
Ryan, a former Irish U21 International, will join former Iron team mate Sam Togwell plus promising Tendayi Darikwa and fellow Irishman Jay O’Shea as the only midfielders signed up for Paul Cook’s 2013-14 squad.
Experienced left winger Andy Welsh, freed by Carlisle United this summer, is also believed to be on Cook’s radar. The 29 year old began with Stockport County and has also played for Sunderland, Blackpool and he was a colleague of Player of the Year Nathan Smith at Yeovil Town.
He made 14 appearances in the Premier League for Sunderland in 2005-06. He was controversially red carded in his second game at that level, at Anfield, though the decision was subsequently overturned so he wasn’t suspended. Liverpool won 1-0.
