FOR half an hour, the Spireites gave as good as they got.
But then promotion chasing Huddersfield Town started to turn on the style and, in the midst of their only dominant spell, Jordan Rhodes continued his scoring form to bag the game’s only goal.
Chesterfield made four changes to the side that earned a last gasp home draw with Walsall. In came Nathan Smith, Tope Obadeyi for his last scheduled loan appearance, Jordan Bowery and, for his first appearance of the season, Gregor Robertson.
The Terriers gave a rare start to former Spireites favourite Donal McDermott, who had a quiet game. They also featured another ex loan hero Jack Hunt.
Obadeyi slipped the game’s first shot just wide of the post after solid work from Dean Morgan and that was quickly followed by a Lee Novak long ranger that Tommy Lee had to save.
Smith made a defence splitting pass to Bowery but the striker failed to control and Gary Roberts then forced a Lee stop as the game continued to entertain.
Lee had to grab at the feet of Rhodes after Robertson had inadvertently given the ball away from a free-kick as the up-beat tempo continued.
Morgan forced Iain Bennett to drop low to gather his shot after some neat forward play from the visitors and, continuing the pattern of the game, Rhodes glanced a header wide cross ahead of another header that flew off target from Roberts’ corner.
Rhodes thought he’d scored as Huddersfield turned on the pressure but a rapid breakaway saw Whitaker block on the line for Spireites.
However parity was short lived as Rhodes neatly flicked in a Novak cross from inside the six.
Alex Mendy and Morgan switched wings at the start of the second half but it was home wide man Roberts that forced the second half’s first save as Lee had to stretch to grasp his low cross.
The contest was much tighter and slower after the restart, with Morgan now in attack and Obadeyi wide.
Rhodes shot wide from outside the box ahead of Morgan doing the same for Chesterfield and Bowery made his own chance, bustling forwards before shooting an inch or two wide.
Morgan earned Chesterfield’s first corner 12 minutes from time, but they were unable to make it count, as the visitors sought an unlikely point but, with Jack Lester suspended, they just lacked the class to pierce the home rearguard.
