Deane Smalley levelled matters two minutes after Paul Turnbull had given the hosts the lead.

Port Vale beat third-placed Rotherham 1-0 and goal-hungry Bury also closed on the npower League Two promotion places.

Second-placed Wycombe took advantage with a 2-1 win over Cheltenham thanks to goals from Ben Strevens and Gareth Ainsworth, Wesley Thomas pulling one back.

James O’Shea scored the only goal at Vale Park, firing home from 20 yards eight minutes after half-time to haul the fifth-placed Staffordshire outfit within a point of their opponents.

And they were joined on that 43-point mark by the fourth-placed Shakers, who enjoyed a 4-2 win at Macclesfield.

Mike Jones gave Bury the early lead and they were 3-2 up after a manic spell of four goals in seven minutes. Ryan Lowe and Nicholas Ajose twice put the visitors two goals ahead but Ross Draper and Tyrone Barnett put Macclesfield back in contention. Lowe then grabbed a late clincher.
