Assessing what John Sheridan will do with his team for tomorrow’s trip to Oldham Athletic is a real tricky one.
Without a league win since mid-September, Spireites manager faces a daunting task as he takes his side to the only other club he’s managed. It’s his first return to Boundary Park since he was sacked in March 2009.
His current side is leaking goals by the bucketful and he described last week’s FA Cup defeat at home to Torquay United as ‘terrible.’
Few players appear to be certain starters. Right back Drew Talbot, striker Jordan Bowery and wingers Craig Westcarr and Alex Mendy are probably the only four penned in starters.
Add to them keeper Ole Soderberg and striker Leon Clarke, who are both expected to start, and you’re left with five guesses to complete the line up.
Central defence could feature any two from ex Oldham man Neal Trotman, Simon Ford, Jonathan Grounds, Dwayne Mattis and Aaron Downes. Grounds could feature at left back as could Nathan Smith.
Central midfield too will see Mark Allott and Danny Whitaker, both former Latics, plus Mark Randall, Lee Johnson and Craig Clay all looking to impress in training today in a bid to win a shirt. Mattis could also be considered for an engine room role.
Loan man Tope Obadeyi will be hoping for a recall as will Dean Morgan, who scored two in a midweek practice game against Doncaster whilst forgotten man Jamie Lowry will be desperate to catch the manager’s eye.
Oldham, in 14th spot, saw off Burton Albion in the FA Cup and have no fresh injury worries. Shefki Kuqi is their dangerman and Robbie Simpson, on loan from Huddersfield, looks to be their creative inspiration.
