Spireites went into the break a goal to the good thanks to an Eoin Doyle penalty on 39, awarded after Jay O’Shea was brought down by Joe Rafferty.

Stephen Dawson received a dressing down from the ref, but no more, after two fouls in 30 seconds. Eoin Doyle’s cut back found Sam Morsy but the midfielder’s eight yard shot was blocked in a fine manner by Tom Kennedy.

Eoin Doyle won the ball on the halfway line, fed Jimmy Ryan who carried it forwards 30 yards but he and Gary Roberts got into a bit of a mix-up though the ball fell to Jay O’Shea whose shot was well saved by Josh Lillis who’d picked up a knock earlier and the save proved to be his last action, he was taken off on a stretcher. He was replaced by teenage debutant Jon Diba Musangu on 62.
Dale suffered a third injury when Scott Tanser was hurt conceding a corner to Gary Roberts, Keith Hill replced the defender with a striker, George Donnelly on 66.
Ian Henderson hit a poor shot well wide to end a promising Dale move as they started to throw everything forward, the visitors having switched to three at the back following Tanser’s injury.
Gary Roberts’ cross was blocked for Spireites eighth corner, soon followed by a ninth without reply to date but Rochdale cleared.
Debutant keeper Jon Diba Musangu escaped with a yellow after handling outside the area, everyone expected a red, and the youngster saved from Eoin Doyle’s low free-kick despite pressure from Sam Hird.
On 75 Eoin Doyle was upended by Rhys Bennett and the Irishman stepped up to convert his second spot kick of the match, it was his fourth goal of the season, young Jon Diba Musangu got a tough to it but the force from the kick was sufficient for it to find the back of the net.
Jay O’Shea’s shot was gathered at the second attempt by the keeper as the home side looked to ram home their considerable advantage.
Armand Gnanduillet came on for Jay O’Shea on 85. Ian Henderson was booked for a foul on Romy Boco.
Jimmy Ryan hit just high after Jon Diba Musangu punched the ball off Armand Gnanduillet’s head as Spireites dominated but deep into stoppage time Ian Evatt’s hand ball allowed Ian Henderson to pull back a consolation.
