The Sprieites attacker will rejoin Port Vale, for whom he made more than 300 appearances.

Dodds, 31, joined Town on an 18-month deal in January but struggled with fitness and started just seven games as Chesterfield plunged out of the Football League.

The Derbyshire Times understands the deal is in the final stages and will free up space for Martin Allen to bring in another new face.
