Wigan Athletic’s interest in Spireites left midfielder Sam Clucas looks to have waned as their valuation falls short of Chesterfield’s. The side relegated from the Championship have been attempting to lure the former Mansfield Town man over the Pennines but they have now turned their attention elsewhere.

Premier League Norwich City, who have yet to make any formal bid, continue to watch the situation.

Newly-appointed assistant manager Brian Carey, who reunites with Dean Saunders after a similar position at both Wrexham, Doncaster and Wolves, has become what his boss says is his “first ever transfer fee paid.”

A small level of compensation had to be paid to Blackburn Rovers where Carey was involved in the youth set up. The Irishman said of his new position: “It’s more cut-throat and it’s probably less secure, but I’m at a stage now where I’m not looking at it like that. I’m confident that we can get it going, make a good job of it and continue the good work that’s been done here.

“You’ve got to take the risk and the gamble.”

“I could have stayed in a more secure job but the opportunity to come here, in particularly when you look at the stadium here and the squad we’ve got, that made the decision quite easy.

“The main thing for me is to try and maintain and make further progress; that has to be the aim. There’s obviously a formula in place here that’s worked quite well, there’s no point ripping everything apart, it’s not like that. There’s some really good foundations in place. We can try to maintain and add to that, bringing in some ideas of our own.”

Most of Spireites’ players attended a get together on Friday ahead of Wednesday’s official start of pre-season when fitness coach Mal Purchase is expected to formally start his employment at the club.
