Chesterfield players did a few hard yards yesterday as they returned to pre-season training.

Fitness coach Shane Nicholson took them to Holmbrook Valley Park and Linacre Reservoirs to remind them there’s plenty to be done before they start conditioning work for real next Wednesday.

Today the squad flies off to Portugal, as they did a year ago, returning on Monday. Tuesday will be a day off before Nicholson gets hold of them again to ensure their fitness levels are right for League One.

Manager Paul Cook, who has signed left back Daniel Jones (Port Vale), central defender Charlie Raglan (FC United) and winger Charlie Dawes (Owls), is aiming to persuading a striker to sign ahead of the trip to the Algarve.

Cook said: “The problem with recruiting is we’ve got good players now but we need to bring in ones that make us better. We’ve lost out on a couple of our targets, that happens, but there’s no point in bringing in players just to make up the numbers.”

Spireites first pre-season game is at Buxton a week on Saturday.
