Chesterfield are assessing the fitness of four players ahead of the Colchester United game.

Liam O’Neil (knee), Sylvan Ebanks-Blake (hamstring), Drew Talbot (ankle) and Sam Hird (ribs) are all in with a chance of making the squad.

Manager Dean Saunders said: “They’ve all got a good chance of playing.”

Lee Novak (dead leg) is fit to play after the buffeting he too in the 3-2 home defeat against Wigan Athletic last weekend.

Angel Martinez remains sidelined after going under the knife at the start of his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

As additional cover, the Spireites have taken WBA youngster Jack Fitzwater into training.

The 17-year-old central defender or full-back could be signed on loan if the fitness of Saunders’ defenders goes badly.

“He’s not looked out of place in training and we’ll make a decision in the next few days,” said the manager.

Fitzwater, who is seen as a real prospect, travelled with Tony Pulis’s first-team squad for pre-season games in Austria and USA this summer. He was due to be under-18 captain this season but he’s been fast-tracked to the U-21 set-up.

Struggling Colchester, without a win this season, have added to their squad this week bringing in unattached 24-year-old striker Marvin Sordell.
