Spireites new striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake was hunted by Dean Saunders right after last season finished.

The former Wolves man said: “The manager gave me a call and made his intentions quite clear from the day after the Wembley final (Preston winning in the play-offs).

“I’ve worked with him before, he gets out on the training field and he still knows where the back of the net is. He’s a lively and passionate manager who has a certain way about how he wants to play and set his team up and I believe we’ll have a successful period.”

The front man appreciates having a former scorer as his mentor; “It’s always good to have a former striker as a manager because he encourages people to get the ball into the box for the strikers to score the goals; he was a top player and he’s a top manager so I’m delighted to be here.”

Ebanks-Blake spent the second half of last season at Deepdale but was used mainly as a sub but he enjoyed his time there: “It was a great experience at Preston, I had a decent spell there, but personally I needed to come to a club at the beginning of the season. I like to score goals and work hard for the team and my plan is to score and get promoted.

“Preston beat Chesterfield in the play-offs but there wasn’t much between the teams, there wasn’t a lot in the games. It’s a good footballing team and a club on the move.”

After several injuries since his nomination as the Championship Player of the Year in 2009, he’s now fully fit: “I feel good, ready to go. I had a bad injury at Wolves when Dean was there and it took some getting over and the last couple of teams I’ve played for I joined in January when you’re already in a battle to get into the side, so it’s good to be here for a full pre-season.”

Spireites have added a home game against Hull City, relegated from the Premier League on the last day of the season. Steve Bruce’s team visits the Proact on Tuesday 21st July and the game kicks off at 7.30pm.
