Spireites striker Marc Richards has been shortlisted for April’s npower League Two Player of the Month.

The 30-year-old former Port Vale frontman scored five goals in five games, including two braces, one against his ex-employees, as Paul Cook’s side fell just short of the play-off zone.

Richards ended the season in fine form after a stop-start campaign blighted by a spate of ankle and hamstring injuries.

The five goals in April took his tally to a respectable if not spectacular 12 from 37 appearances, four of those off the bench.

Rotherham United’s Michael O’Connor and York City’s Chris Smith are Richards’ fellow shortlisted players. The judges of the award include the Football League Show’s Mark Clemmit and former player Don Goodman.

Midfielder Tendayi Darikwa won the young players’ version of the award in January, though that particular accolade was from throughout the Football League rather than just a divisional award.

The club still hasn’t issued any updates regarding the contracts offered to Drew Talbot and Jacob Hazel nor on progress of negotiations with defender Richard Brindley and midfielder Mark Randall.

Talks with Accrington Stanley attacking midfielder Romy Boco appear to have stalled.
