John Sheridan has offered new 12-month deals to five out-of-contract players but has told 10 of the first-team squad that they can go.
Youngsters Craig Clay and Tendayi Darikwa, who started just three games between them this season, plus super-sub striker Scott Boden and midfielders Mark Randall and Danny Whitaker all have the chance to re-sign.
No deals have been offered to Aaron Downes, Greg Fleming, Simon Ford, Dan Gray, Jimmy Juan, Jamie Lowry, Alex Mendy, Dean Morgan, Derek Niven and Gregor Robertson.
Loan players Josh Thompson, Franck Moussa, Nicky Ajose and Liam Ridehalgh have returned to their parent clubs.
There were few surprises in the list of those leaving, defender Robertson being the most surprising though he has suffered badly with a couple of serious injuries in recent times. The departure of Niven and Downes means that Jack Lester becomes the club’s longest serving player.
Chief Executive Chris Turner said of Lester: “To have players like Jack around the club is a great example for the likes of Boden and Jordan Bowery. Having him around can only be beneficial for the other players.”
The club has indicated it will have just 22 players in the squad next season, none of them loans, but that headcount does include first-year pros Jack Waddle, Jacob Hazel and Jonathan Wafula.
Those three, plus the five offered new deals and the eight still contracted players, indicates Sheridan will be seeking five or six new faces, one of them a goalkeeper.
