This is the moment Chesterfield’s onlooking contingent realised they were heading into the northern area final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, after watching as Drew Talbot kept his nerve and slotted in the decisive spot kick during a tense penalty shoot-out win over Oldham Athletic. Captured by Steve Parkin.
Marc Richards, Eoin Doyle, Jimmy Ryan, Gary McSheffrey and Tendayi Darikwa had all scored as the Spireites converted six from seven in the shoot-out at Boundary Park on Tuesday night.
Ollie Banks missed his kick but Tommy Lee was at his best to save from Danny Philliskirk and Anton Rodgers, son of Liverpool boss Brendan, as Chesterfield booked a place alongside Fleetwood Town in the area final. Darikwa had earlier cancelled out Philliskirk’s opener for Oldham during 90 minutes of normal time.
Paul Cook said afterwards: “We’re delighted to get through. I think when you get through to area finals it excites people, it certainly excites me as a manager.”
