Chesterfield manager Dean Saunders has indicated Lee Novak is unlikely to be available tomorrow for the home game against table toppers Burton Albion.

The Birmingham City loanee picked up a thigh injury early on in the 1-0 defeat at Coventry City last weekend.

“He’s having a scan on Friday so we can find out how serious it is but I don’t expect him to be available,” said Saunders.

The manager is pleased with how his squad has trained this week.

“Training’s been good. We’ve had a full week with Chris Herd,” he said.

“In truth, he probably wasn’t quite ready last week but, with Drew Talbot suspended, we had to play him.

“Sam Hird and Liam O’Neil have both had the chance to improve their fitness, as has Drew.”

As well as Novak, Chesterfield will be without long-term injury victim Angel plus the suspended Mani Dieseruvwe, who picked up a second yellow as a substitute last week when he tried to punch the ball into Coventry’s net.

He’d also come off the bench to be red-carded in the Capital One Cup defeat at Carlisle United last month.

Saunders quipped: “He’ll be a pub-quiz question - ‘who’s received two red cards before he’s ever started a game?’

“He needs to learn. When you’ve picked up a yellow card you can’t do anything that risks getting another.”

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s Brewers’ have won their last two games, both 1-0, and Saunders said: “They are a tight, solid unit.”
