Chesterfield: Key duo to miss out as Spireites face Gills test

Have your say

The Spireites travel down to Gillingham this afternoon without two influential players.

Sam Morsy and Dan Jones will both miss tomorrow’s game through suspension whileGeorg Margreitter, whose loan spell ended after the home defeat against Bradford City, will also have to be replaced.

Jones also missed the Bradford game so Sam Clucas will continue at left-back whilst Ian Evatt and Sam Hird look nailed on to replace the other two absentees, Evatt at centre back and Hird as a holding midfield man.

Armand Gnanduillet’s position is, as it frequently is, at risk due to manager Paul Cook favouring 4-2-3-1 and Eoin Doyle is certain to play. The big striker could be replaced by either Dan Gardner or Romy Boco depending on how gung-ho Cook wants to go into the game.

Boco offers a steadier option whist Gardner is a potential match winner but with less of a defensive game than his rival.

The manager could recall Michael Onovwigun, Charlie Dawes or Jack Broadhead from loan spells at Sheffield, Matlock Town and Frickley Athletic respectively as he’ll be short on bench numbers otherwise.

He could choose to reward a couple of members of the youth team that this week saw off Aston Villa in the FA Youth Cup.

Defender Laurence Maguire and striker Jake Beesley would be the obvious two.

Goalkeeper Tommy Lee will play for the 250th time to level him up with the great Ray Middleton, who played for the club either side of the Second World War.

Middleton stands second in the all-time appearance list for Chesterfield keepers with just Ron Powell ahead.

Lee will share that position and presumably overhaul the total over Christmas.

Right-back Tendayi Darikwa is set to make his 100th league appearance for the club.
