Spireites’ goalkeepers are back in training already. Coach Eric Nixon has got Tommy Lee and Aaron Chapman in a couple of days a week before the full first team reports for the planned pre-season work.
Nixon said: “You can never practice too much, so it seemed obvious to get the lads in to do some early work to improve their techniques and build up early confidence.”
Manager Paul Cook is again considering loaning out the inexperienced Chapman, 24. He had a personally successful spell at Chester last season and his boss feels that a similar move could be beneficial. That could see Ian Dunbavin making a loan return from Accrington Stanley.
Defender Jack Broadhead, approaching his second year as a pro, is another man who could be farmed out to get more minutes on the park. He was lent out to Buxton, Matlock and Worksop Town last season.
Cook’s players who ended last season with various injuries, Ian Evatt, Drew Talbot, Ollie Banks and Dan Gardner are all progressing well, Banks being the main concern, though he’s hoping to be fit for when the League One season kicks off.
Chesterfield’s first friendly is at Buxton on July 5th followed by Matlock Town four days later.
Shrewsbury, on July 12, provide Cook’s men with their first test against League opposition.
