Dean Saunders started his Chesterfield tenure with back to back wins against Northern Premier League hosts.

A 3-0 win at Matlock Town was followed 24 hours later by a 4-0 win at Buxton on Friday night and Saunders’ key signing, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, appeared in both games.

The 29 year old striker scored at Matlock before being replaced before the interval and he continued his fitness build up with another 30-odd minutes at Silverlands.

The former Wolves man is pleased with how his fitness is improving. He said he felt, “Good, really good; I’m pleased to get a couple of good run outs and a couple of good wins, it’s the start of a long journey.”

Ebanks-Blake, who was at Preston last season, had been working with conditioning coach Mal Purchase ahead of the squad’s formal return to work on 1st July and the raider admitted the training and the man was tough’. He added: “It’s been very hard, but I need it, I’ve not had a pre-season for a couple of years. I know Mal from working with him in my time at Wolves so we’re building up strength, building me up to be ready for the beginning of the season.”

Of the wins and the performances, he was enthused, saying: “You can only beat the team that’s in front of you but if you look closely at the way we’re playing, we play fast, quick, we play a good passing style and I think we’ll be a handful for any team.”

He’s encouraged by the team’s style and knows it complements his own: “It definitely does and we’ve played really well in the two games, we’ve not looked under pressure but more importantly the speed we move the ball at is the key. It’s exciting and I’m pleased to be here.”
