Spireites crashed to a 3-1 home defeat against Gillingham, who remain fourth in League One with Chesterfield in mid-table.
Chesterfield boss Dean Saunders made six changes to the team that exited the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Rochdale on Tuesday; out went Armand Gnanduillet, who is out on loan at Stevenage, while the other five were all on the bench, Mani Dieseruvwe, Drew Talbot, Dion Donohue, Jake Orrell and Sam Hird. In aome Ian Evatt, despite having a broken finger, Sam Morsy - back after suspension - Chris Herd, last weekend’s brace scorer Dan Gardner, Jay O’Shea and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.
Aaron Chapman returned to the bench as cover for Tommy Lee, his first involvement of the season after recovering from injury and returning from a successful loan spell at Bristol Rovers.
Gillingham arrived in fourth spot but their lofty position is largely based on a fine home record, just five of their 21 points had come on the road and Justin Edinburgh’s side had lost their last two trips.
Gillingham took a 26th-minute lead when John Egan scored from six yards.
But it took Spireites only nine minutes to equalise with a Rai Simons right-footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner after Sam Morsy set up the chance.
The Spireites pressed until half-time but couldn’t add a second.
And they went behind in the 53rd minute when Rory Donnelly headed home aftetr Jermaine McGlashan crossed.
And Donnelly turned provider in the 72nd minute with Henry Lennon heading home to make it 3-1.
Jay O’Shea had a shot blocked and the hosts had several corners but were unable to get back into the game.
