Joint top Chesterfield were hoping to reinforce their League Two promotion credentials tonight - but it proved to be an evening of frustration.

Paul Cook’s men took on bottom club Northampton Town, who had managed just 13 points from 17 games.

Chesterfield, unbeaten in their last five games, have not been conceding many goals lately.

And they started the night confident they could overpower their struggling visitors.

Cobblers keeper, Sheffield-born, Matt Duke had a bit of work to do in the first 10 minutes, but nothing spectacular.

However Tommy Lee, at the other end had to be on his toes to stop a Stuart Dallas effort.

On 20 minutes, Jay O’Shea turned on the edge of the Northampton area, but his shot flew over the bar.

And there was a let off for the Spireites when Kane Ferdinand nodded over from the edge of the six-yard box.

The second half mirrored the lack of penetration from both sides.

While there were spells when both sides pressed, a goal looked a long way off.

And when Armand Gnanduillet headed wide he was substituted by Marc Richards, on the hour.

The move almost worked.

Richard almost met a left wing cross at the back post, but the ball flashed wide.

Frustratingly Jimmy Ryan and Gary Roberts both sent efforts directly at Duke.

It wasn’t to be - and this evening will be viewed as two points lost by Cook.
