Now I’m not taking sides, but I’m glad that Sheffield United are now odds on to finish higher than Wednesday this season.
I put my neck on the line in the summer and decided to price the match bet between the two Sheffield clubs with United as the odds on favourites.
I soon realised the perceived error of my ways as every man and his cat took the 6/5 on Wednesday.
It seemed that I had got this wrong. Wednesday were a shorter price than the Blades for the title.
You could almost hear the cries. Wednesday are clearly the better prospect for promotion! United will combust! Danny Wilson will be out the door pretty soon! Oh yee of little faith.
Some of us knew the real story. Anyway before I’m brought back to earth with an almighty bump, the initial skirmishes this season have gone my way and I’m enjoying gloating about it.
Time will tell though. Wednesday have not started that well but things could well change. It’s a long season. In the title betting the Blades are now 11/2 with Wednesday at 8/1, and it is 7/4 that United get promoted with the Owls at 9/4.
Now on to matters at the weekend. Wednesday take on Notts County and this might be a little sticky.
County have started well under Martin Allen and they have been playing some tidy football. This will be no pushover for Gary Megson.
They’ll have to work hard for the win. I’m not sure I’d want to back them at 17/20, so the value will be County at 3/1.
Danny Wilson will be looking to make it four on the trot against Tranmere.
They are 7/5 with Tranny at 7/4 and the draw at 9/4. Tranmere have started well but their two wins have been against Leyton Orient and Chesterfield two sides that are struggling, so the Blades do have a big chance here.
I did think that Chesterfield might do well this season but it has been a bit of a eye opener for them so far. It’s still early enough to turn things around so the next few matches will tell us a lot. My bet of the week is Cardiff City to beat Burnley on Saturday in the Championship. They are 7/4.
