chesterfield manager John Sheridan has never led his side to victory in the first away match of a season. and this continued today as his side, playing in gold, failed to come away with a gold medal in London.

Spireites were already in new territory having never previously played AFC Wimbledon, who were only formed 10 years ago and who enjoyed a remarkable rise through the pyramid ever since, last season being their first campaign at league level.

Spireites fell behind to a real sucker punch after 35 minutes. Bowery and Whitaker had a misunderstanding on the left whilst on the attack, MacDonald humped the ball forward and MIDSON outpaced Trotman to flick the ball beyond Lee.

Togwell was booked for a foul on Luke Moore as Spireites’ frustration showed.

Bowery’s shot on the turn following solid Togwell work was blocked on the line and Randall hit the loose ball high as the break approached with Spireites wondering just how they’ve managed to be behind in a game they’d bossed.

Half-time: AFC Wimbledon 1 Chesterfield 0

Trotman cleared a Dons’ corner as the game flowed both ways leaving Chesterfield frustrated at their inability to break down an obstinate defence.

Richards’ header was blocked for a corner but Hird headed well wide. Boden came on for Bowery.

Richards miscued badly after a quick break involving Boden and Whitaker.
