Left-sided defender John, who can also operate in midfield, will join the Spireites on an initial one-month loan from Cardiff City.

The 20-year-old has Premier League and Championship experience with the Bluebirds and international honours for Wales in 2013.

He posted on Twitter: “Happy to say that I’m joining @ChesterfieldFC on loan, looking forward to it and can’t wait to play.”

Both players are known to Chesterfield manager Danny Wilson and first team coach Chris Morgan, who hope to have both in their ranks this week.

Striker Slew started out at Sheffield United before his move to Blackburn Rovers in 2011. He was released by Cambridge United in January.

The Spireites fought back to claim a 1-1 draw at Colchester United on Tuesday night, despite playing the majority of the match with ten men.

Skipper Gary Liddle was given his marching orders but Wilson hinted after the game that the club are likely to appeal the decision.

“I’m disgusted with the decision,” said Wilson. “It’s a clean tackle, it’s a hard tackle but he gets the ball cleanly and goes through the ball.

“What wrong with that nowadays? Can we not tackle nowadays? The referee is in a perfect position and his reactions so quickly were wrong and that affected the game greatly and gave them a great advantage.

“They didn’t take hold of it in my opinion because we performed so well.”

Wilson was pleased with his side’s display and that of hometown midfielder Connor Dimaio on his full debut for Chesterfield.

He added: “We were given some really tough circumstances in which to play the game out in the early part of the game, but we’ve come through it very well.

“I thought the discipline was excellent and the work ethic from the boys was fantastic, in the second half in particular.”
