The Chesterfield defender made his first league appearance in more than eight months as a second half substitute in last Saturday’s 3-1 win over Swindon Town.

But has since sustained what manager Danny Wilson described as “a relapse” of the injury in training this week and was sent to see a specialist in the field.

He is waiting to find out the extent of the injury.

Wilson said: “We thought he was OK but he’s had a relapse of the problem with his ankle. He’s having it checked out again. It seems to be a never ending saga at the moment.

“It’s not particularly confidence boosting from Dan’s point of view but we need to get to the root of it and find out exactly what is causing this problem with his ankle.

“Hopefully in the next few days we will have some results on that.

“No player wants to be on the sidelines. Dan has so much to offer and that’s why it’s important to have people in place who can cover.”

Jones suffered a fractured ankle in November 2015 - against Swindon - and had two screws put in his foot.

He made it back to reserve-team level but felt pain in his foot and one of the screws was taken out in March, ruling him out for the rest of last season.

Wilson is looking forward to seeing Jones back in contention once he has fully recovered.

And added: “Dion (Donohue) was exceptional the other night.

“It would be a fantastic contest between the two of them when fit. Young Derek Daly was on the bench and again he would be the cover for Dion with Dan being injured.

“It’s important we have specialised players playing in the correct areas as I’ve said from the beginning of the season. I think we’ve got that. Hopefully we’ll have more competition when Dan’s fit.”

Wilson expects Paul McGinn, Dion Donohue and Sam Hird to all shake off knocks and be fit for Saturday’s trip to Shrewsbury Town.

But the forecast isn’t as bright for Sylvan Ebanks-Blake who has an illness and hasn’t trained this week.

“He hasn’t been training. He’s had a illness so he’s not trained for four or five days,” said Wilson.

“It’ll be next week before we see Sylvan back on the training ground and hopefully that carrot gets dangled and he’ll take a bite of it.”
