Derbyshire Times Spireites correspondent Graham Smyth believes there are a number of likely candidates for the award.

He said: “Sam Hird must stand a great chance, having performed consistently at the centre of defence, especially in recent games when he’s been almost faultless, helping out new boy Tom Anderson.

“Tommy Lee has played45 games between the posts, and will be a popular choice for many supporters.

“Only one other player has made that many appearances, Jay O’Shea, and some will agree with Hird’s assessment on Saturday that the Irishman is Chesterfield’s most creative player.

“The goals of Lee Novak have been crucial this season, although he would undoubtedly have finished with many more had he enjoyed better or more consistent service.”
