The midfielder and right-back have both been out with hamstring injuries, McGinn a long term absentee and Nolan a more recent victim.

Having suffered a cruel blow at the weekend with a serious knee injury for captain Ian Evatt, Caldwell is delighted to get some bodies back for the relegation fight.

The Chesterfield boss doesn’t expect Evatt toplay any more part in that battle.

“It looks like his medial ligament in his knee. We’re getting a scan to know the full extent,” he said.

“But I would think it would be minimum to the end of the season.

“He’s been fantastic, he’s been a leader, he’s passed the ball well, defended well, aerially especially.

“I think any player who is missing is a big blow, to lose your captain is obviously big but it opens an opportunity for other players to come in and show what they’ve got to offer.”

Caldwell has said that he wants his young players to step up and take more responsibility.

But the return of McGinn, who played just 11 times for Town this season thanks to a reoccurring hamstring issue, will add know-how in defence.

“Paul McGinn will provide a bit more experience,” said Caldwell.

“Jon Nolan will be in the squad along with Paul which is good, they’re both big players.

“Jon has been excellent in the games he has played.

“Paul I know from games he played up in Scotland, the quality he has, but I’ve not had the opportunity to select him yet and it’ll be great to have him back for the remaining games.”
