Bury 1 Chesterfield 0

Chesterfield rode their luck for over an hour but they succumbed to a 68th minute goal from the impressive Danny Mayor who picked the ball up in the middle of Spireites half, burst forwards, made himself some space to shoot in off the far post for the game’s only goal.

Ironically Mayor had been quietened down by a formation switch after he and fellow winger Joe Dodoo had given Chesterfield’s defenders plenty to think about on the sodden pitch that deteriorated minute by minute as we had 90 minutes of a non stop deluge. The two flank men both hit the post before the break as did Tom Soares in real tough conditions.

Mark Smith introduced Jay O’Shea and Dan Gardner at the break and they livened things up but the visitors couldn’t muster up enough to worry keeper Daniel Bachmann too often, a palm away from a Sam Morsy long ranger was his most important intervention until stoppage time when he made a fantastic stop at full stretch to his left to deny Ian Evatt who ended the game as an attacker, his six yard shot seemed destined to level things up.

Plenty of effort but the weather again ruined any chance of a classic.

Ref Peter Bankes had concerns about the game getting through 90 minutes but gave the the game the go-ahead.

Spireites’ caretaker boss Smith was without the injured Richard Wood and Lee Novak and dropped-ever present O’Shea to the bench so in came Charlie Raglan, Ollie Banks and, after two more goals in midweek in the reserves, Mani Dieseruvwe in a 3-5-2 line up.

Spireites had done fairly well at this ground in the last few years after a 60 year winless Gigg Lane run in the league but that ended nine years ago and points have regularly been garnered here since.
