Bull set for Dome debut at new weight

DONCASTER'S Stefy Bull will make his debut as a light-welterweight in a four rounder against Nuneaton-based journeyman Kristian Laight at the Dome on Friday.

The 30-year-old, stopped in three rounds by Amir Khan at the Millennium Stadium in April, admiited that he had been struggling to make lightweight for several fights.

"I had to lose 18 pounds in a month prior to the Khan fight," Bull told The Star.

"It wasn't ideal preparation for such an important fight, though I am not looking to use that as an excuse for my performance on the night.

"Take nothing away from Khan, he is a special boxer who will probably be world champion in the next couple of years.

"He has physically matured in the last year or so. He was too good for me on the night and it was no disgrace to lose against him.

"What did disappointment me though was my own perforrmance; that wasn't the real me in the ring that night and it was probably the worst performance of my career.

"Unfortunately the fight was shown live on national television and millions of people will have seen it. I had been considering calling it a day after the fight but there was no way that I wanted to end my career on such a low note and I told my manager John Rushton that I would be carrying on on the way back the dressing room.

"I have had a bit of a break because I got married in the summer and I also started a new job. But I have been back in full training for a month and I can't wait to get back in the ring, especially with it being at the Dome where I haven't fought for a year."

The Bull fight forms part of the undercard to the televised British super-featherweight title clash between Carl Johanneson and Michael Gomez. Tickets are still available from the venue on 01302 370777 or the box office on 0871 2261508
